I have had some on my driveway for 15 years, Iv'e used detergent, parrafin, pressure wash, nothing seems to work although it's hardly noticable now, it's the weather and time that has been most effective, mine is concrete by the way.
Try engine cleaner and a powerful jet wash. or their is a product called Elbow Grease which which is sold by Superbuys or if not G&T`s which is as good as anything and only 99p. It`s very good for cleaning all around the house also.
Bye the way Homerbart my surname is Homer and I am called Bart as a nickname
get a can of "Gunk" from your local spares shop.
if that doesnt work, get a decent bottle of washing up liquid. pour it over the oil and leave it to soak in for a while. give it a good scrub with a hard brush and warm water.

thanks for your answers - my friend's daughter picked up fantastic stuff (dont know what it is) from Halfords. Apparently oil literally melted away -
