I have recently bought a 1997 golf, i noticed that after going over a bump.or raised road signs/rumble bumps, that the rear end twitches. I took it to a garage, they checked all steering/suspension joints and found nothing worn, so they suggested i changed the rubbers on the rear stut tops,(as there was a bit of free play) which i did but there is no improvement. Wheels are secure pressures are correct. Any suggestions ? The car is standard, no lowering or bigger wheels.Thanks.

A common probem on these is the rear axle mounting bushes, with the car not raised on a jack etc, get someone to push car up and down and you will see movement in the bushes. (where the axle mounts to the body, just in front of the rear wheels) Not a diy job to repair as they are pressed into the axle.
