Marzipan

The infant and I (almost!) share the same birthday. Beloved got us a cake with two marzipan classic cars on the top, and I'd like to preserve these.

What would be the best way of doing this? Can you spray varnish or something on them? Someone suggested using hairspray!

I would have thought painting them with a few coats of varnish would do the trick....
