I have a friend who emigrated to Canada in 2000. She has asked me if I could possibly find an address and/or phone number for an old pal of hers so she can get in touch with her over Christmas. Can anyone tell me if there are any sites that I can access for free on the internet so that I can find out these details without paying? I know the name and the town her friend lives, but they are not listed in my local phone directory. Any advice would be most welcome.

you should really try popping into the local reference library and asking to look at the electoral roll, you can find the address then, but the peoplefinder site may help

Any online search (or a search using a commercially available CD) will only search the edited electoral roll. Most people now put a tick in the box, on the electoral registration form, which removes their details from the edited roll (which is available to mailing organizations, etc).

The full electoral roll, in electronic format, is only available to authorised bodies, such as the police and credit reference agencies. To view the full roll, you'll have to consult the paper version (which is listed in street order, not in alphabetical order of surnames) which can only be consulted locally (in public libraries or at council offices).

Just a suggestion, try friends reunited. If your friend shares a school or workplace in common, you never know they may be on it. Even if they aren't, I think you can do name searches. Whatever, worth a try.
