ford escort wont start

my s reg ford escort cut out whilst driving it,i was low on petrol so thought it was that but put some in and it turns over but wont kick in and sometimes while im trying to kick it in the dash lights flash on and off on there own and the rev needle seems to fly up and down wats going on?????

ooh, that sounds like the engine management system, If it were me I would have it checked at the garage, it may be something quite minor but it is doubtful.

it needs to be put on a diagnostic machine

if i leave it for half an hour it starts but then dies again ?

a diagnosis would be the best thing to do it could be a sensor that has gone.
