removing Nortons

I just like to thank all that helped with the info on removing Norton Internet security I have now completely removed it from my computer and replaced it with AVG and Ad-Aware SE Personal and it seems all OK, does anyone know if I will I need to put anything more on my computer to make it safe it was with Nortons

You've choosen the best anti-virus in AVG. Have used it for over 5 years and never had a virus. Had Norton before [becaus e it came with the comp] that and had heaps of trojans and other nasties.

In the present technological climate people are getting a bit paranoid about 'viruses'. Windows XP and later has its own firewall and most routers/modems now come with firewall protection. Virtually all ISPs have some level of security, although that is only as good as the user.

No matter how sophisticated your protection is, there is no complete protection against a new virus until the techies have detected it and written a neutralising program. The ordinary home user is unlikely to get a new one though.

Using common sense with your mail program and downloads is your best protection. Illegal downloads are the most frequent carriers of trouble.

Theoretically, you've now got everything you need because Windows XP and Vista run their own firewall by default. However, most sources state that the Windows firewall isn't as good as 3rd party software. The usual advice is to install either Zone Alarm (which I use and is extremely popular) or Comodo (which some ABers prefer). The links were in my previous post.

However, it's regarded as unwise to run 2 software firewalls simultaneously, so you should disable the Windows firewall. It's very easy to do but the instructions vary depending upon your operating system. For XP, XP+SP1 and XP+SP2, scroll down on this page:

Zone Alarm used be good but is now crap. They bloated it badly like Norton did with their products. You don't really gain much above the windows firewall with this other kind of firewall anyway.

The important thing is to prevent your computer telling about itself to anything that asks online. Other firewalls supposedly prevent malware that has gotten into your computer from getting an outbound connection. Although this sounds good, in reality anything that gets in will be able to diable the firewall and obtain access.

Incidentally you probably haven't gotten entirely rid of Norton. It is so pervasive that it is very hard to entirely purge from any system.

I know I'm still finding bits of Norton even though I downloaded Nortons remover tool have two files named Symantec that will not let me delete from my system and I bet theres more but my computer seems to be running all ok at the minute so I'll just have to wait and see

couple of points

currently free AVG is scoring lowest of all the virus scanners (84%) avira is just as free ... but more efficient at 92%.


Buenchico is right ... best include a firewall
zone alarm
the installer includes ZA and internet security ... so it is bigger than it used to be. but the windows XP firewall only stops incoming traffic .... Vista stops in and outgoing .... but does require a certain amount of knowledge.

zone alarm is in effect "plug and play" .... it's maybe not the best .... but it "learns" about specifics on YOUR machine and way of working .... so on that alone it's better than either window's version.

as for totally removing norton .... google your version of norton "remove norton 2006".
