is it possible for a grill element to also act as an oven element on certain models of oven??

Yes - I have a combi oven and an electric oven and both use the top grill element when used as an oven.

When used as an oven an element at the bottom or back is used in conjunction with the top element.

If the elements are the same size and SHAPE they can be used in both places provided the wattage is the same.
