Apprenticeships for children

I believe the government are re-introducing apprenticeships for teenagers and that many already exist. What is the pathway for applying to take one of these for a 16 year old.

I work for a College and we offer apprenticeships. They are advertised in our prospectus the same as any other course and students apply for them in the same way.

If they are successful, they do the first year in college during which time we help them find employment and the second year is 4 days per week in work and 1 day per week in College. Once they have the basic qualification, they can continue on day release or at nights to do further qualifications in their chosen field, like an HNC or HNC and then go on to a degree.

I work in a car bodyshop we have young men coming from the local schools asking for an apprenticeships about a month before they finish (july/august) and the manager will take them on. I know that UK Assistance (rbs owned car bodyshop) has an apprenticeship sceme that they will employe two every year.

Thanks for your replies. The 16 year old in question is due to leave school soon and he has been advised to continue his studies at college for 2 years and he will receive about �30 per week. The problem is he dislikes school and is highly unlikely to progress on an academic path. By taking an apprenticeship I believe he will receive a minimum of �80 p.w. plus on the job training and also day release at college which seems a more sensible route if a company is willing to take him on.

I believe the granting of apprenticeships has changed dramatically and that careers are available in a multitude of subjects many of them not academic.

Go onto your local or county council sites they offer fantastic apprenticeships and these often lead to a job within the council in whatever area your child chooses.
