Cleaning white fur
6 Answers
I have inherited a love nice white fur hat which looks slightly grubby. Don't know what the fur is, but the inside skin lining is white. (Quite apart from the ethical argument about wearing fur).... How can I clear it to bring it up to its original whiteness? I'm wondering whether washing it gently in soapy water would do the trick but am fearful that the fur, after it has dried will be all lumpy and "matted together and am unsure how one would best fluff it up again..

If you submerge the hat in water, you will have problems with the silk and the interfacing that gives the hat its shape.
However, if it is only the furry part that you want to clean it is possible to do this at home;-
Use a flannel, or an old towel lathered up with shampoo - then stroke the fur in the same direction that it lies.
Then use a clean damp cloth to remove the soap repeatedly until all the soap has gone, again in the same direction.
Use a hairdryer and a soft brush to dry it.
I've done this on fur and sheepskin and it has been successful.
Good luck.
