I don't know about the wrapping of Christmas presents, but here is a website showing what you can and can't take into Australia

Hi jellybaby196 I won a trip to Melborne and I certainly wouldn't risk taking any food at the airport they X ray your suitcase when you get off the plane and go through airport checks its was far worse than the USA, I was surprised as the queen is head of state there but found it interesting and was a friendly place, have a great time in the sun.
Leave your presents unwrapped. If customs want to search your belongings you would have to unwrap them.

I took Colemans Mustard, HP Sauce, Marmite and Yorkshire teabags in my main luggage from the UK to Brazil ok. I connected through the USA and it all got through ok.

Just a tip - You can get Colemans and HP in plastic containers from the supermarket. Everything in my suitcase got battered but my glass jar of Marmite made it through in one piece!
I travelled to Oz in September with jars of Marmite and Bisto veggie gravy granules in my case -which those I was visiting said I would be allowed through. I suggest you look at the web link someone sent you and see what food types you would like to take - basically you can't have raw food, plant stuffs etc (ie herbs). So long as the foods you are carrying definitely aren't on the government disallowed list, I suggest you carry them in your case, but on arriving in Australia you will be given paperwork to fill in - one asking if you're carrying on food stuffs. Tick yes, and declare them on arrival. There will then be a few of you in the declaration queue where they simply scan your case and will probably ask you to open it so they can look at your foods. If they don't like it, they'll take it from you at this point - however, you won't be punished as you'll have declared it. This is exactly what I did, and I was allowed to continue on through. Hope this helps and I'm not too late replying. You're going to have a fab trip!
