When I bought a freeview set top box I was asked for my postcode, was this to check the fact that I have a TV licence or was it to activate some sort of signal to allow me to watch freeview, thanks in advance.

I can only see it was for your licence or just information as they don't need to activate any signal for you to watch Free view
Tv licence.
Not everyone can receive Freeview. And in a lot of areas, the reception is poor, meaning not all channels will be available. The easiest way to check that you do not live in such a place, is by postcode.

The Freeview website checks coverage by entering your postcode.

None of the above.........it was to be sure that you have freeview digital tv reception where you live........they didn't want you coming back and saying "I can't receive any stations"
Me again.....'gromit's post wasn't there when I read it earlier

I'll let you off this time.
When a dealer sells or rents TV receiving equipment, under The Wireless Telegraphy Act 1967 (as amended) the dealer is required to notify TV Licensing within 28 days of each transaction, providing full details of the purchaser or hirer.

This includes the sale or rental of any new or second-hand TVs, VCRs, DVD recorders, Set-top boxes, PCs with broadcast (TV) cards and PC TV cards

They must inform TV Licensing of the purchaser or hirer's name and address and the address and postcode of where the equipment will be installed. Also whether the equipment is colour or black and white.
It is an offence for the dealer not to notify TV Licensing of every transaction. Failure to do so could result in a fine of up to 1,000 per offence. Recently a major retailer was fined a total of 14,400 plus 1,350 costs for failing to notify TV Licensing of television equipment sales and rentals in 3 of its stores.
