I heard somewhere recently that in the future we will have a entirely new way of lighting our homes by LED and doing away with the conventional bulbs. Has anyone heard about this also, or was I dreaming?

Not unless they re-invent the LED and make it 100 times brighter as they are still nowhere near as bright as a light bulb or fluorescent tubes.....

I'm still waiting for flying cars to come around, as a child I thought they'd be here by the year 2000
LEDs are available now that are about 100x brighter than when I first remember them over 20 yrs ago. And with clever matrixing, displays are becoming brighter. It will come but there's a long way to go yet.
Wasn't it the US Government that said in about 1960 that there would only ever be a need for half a dozen computers in the country? Mind you, they were as big as houses then.
Something like this then:

just under 600 lumens which is roughly the equivilent of a 60w incandescent in light output.

I don't think it's going to happen any time soon but it's only a matter of time before domestic incandescent bulbs are banned

Give it 2 or 3 years and then another 4 or 5 to get implemented.

It's been in the news lately. They've found at Glasgow University that they can use a nano-imprint lithography process that etches microscopic holes into the surface of the LED, thus allowing many more times the usual amount of light to be emitted.

Thanks heathfield , buildersmate, and jake-the-peg.---- cockney -si a bit of a sceptic. At least I wasn`t dreaming.
Mr Spudqueen is currently working on a project that will hopefully have all buildings (work places and homes) lit by LED in the near future. As he is currently working on some patents can't say too much at the moment, but watch this space!
Actually, conventional bulbs are being banned by our greeny govt in Ireland. If it works out, you'll soon see it in the UK too.
