I 'met' him briefly -- enough for an exchange of pleasantries and little else -- in a crowd of peaceful demonstrators protesting against the Thatcher government, in 1985. He was charming, appreciative, informed and polite. I'm not convinced that everyone who's come into contact with him would share my view, nor whether he deserves it on balance. Can't comment on that. But for those few seconds 17 years ago, yes, he was very nice!
