looking on the web ... the cheaper cameras seem to be mainly 640x480 webcams stuck on the end of a 200x microscope
then the 1.3Mp and on up (as do the prices)
it strikes me that the whole concept of tools as toys is flawed.
We use microscopes to show electronic components up close ... this we do intensively ... untill we stop .... then it might be months 'till the next time.
In all the time we've had the kit I personally have used it ..... well never.
As a budding scientist ... my dad bought me quite a nice one for a birthday ... this resulted in a short killing spree .... a flurry of dismemberment ..... and then insect king was again safe on our street .... I still have the scope .... it's almost like new!!!!.
the gizmos I used most ... were my trusty magnifying glass (both for looking at ... and burning limbs off insects)
and a telescope/microscope

which I used for looking at the limbs I'd so recently detached from the insects.
I used them because they fit neatly into my pocket .... so when the urge or opportunity arose ... the kit was handy
..... I didn't use the microscope ... because by the time I got home ..... I'd lost interest.
I was a scatter brained kid ... as were all my chums ...
maybe if I'd persisted with the microscope .....
