htm for a website with some information on the matter. The basic problem seems to be that - though some have a primitive optical sensitivity - they haven't got brains capable of interpreting what they "see"! It's difficult to grasp, therefore, what "see" means in their case.

Yep. Many of them sense light and dark (particularly moon jellies), and some respond to movement. But most of this seems to be an automatic response.
