Can anyone solve this one for me please?
How many dogs are depicted on the Bayeux Tapestry? I have found two conflicting answers. One of 35, the other 55.Which one is right and why? Many thanks for your help in advance.

35. The dogs can easily be confused with wolves and foxes so perhaps that is why you have found the number 55.

My mind is such that I'm always intrigued by such questions. Two websites I've just looked at both give 55 but one guy in a "learned" article gives 22 identifiable and believes that othjers may be either foxes or wolves. I'd be inclined to go with 55 as that's the one which seems to appear more often buit it's one of those where you pay your money and take your choice. Neither Britannica nor Brewers Dictionary of Phrase and Fable give anything.

The official (French) Bayeux Tapestry website says "une cinquataine" .. about fifty.

There is a full size replica on display at the Reading Museum, www.bayeuxtapestry.org.uk.Why don't you e-mail the museum and ask them, I'm sure they would know the answer.
