In1861 at the funeral of Prince Albert, Queen Victoria was seen to holding back the tears with a white handkerchief. However, from her carriage window, Victoria heard a small child ask if the the Queen was dusting? The Queen was not amused, and ordered that in future dusters should be produced in a colour other than white. The manufacturers chose yellow.

British merchant ships use a red duster, and the Royal Navy have a white duster.
