Yes Jen, I agree with you, but that wasn't the question! How does one go about tracing ones family tree without being fleeced by a group of mormons or some profiteering company holding your family details for ransom? Ok, that wasn't the question either but you know what I mean! :)

You can't have it traced for free but you can get free advice on where to start from Cecil Humphery-Smith at www.ihgs.ac.uk and Achievements are honest and the best in the business.

You can go to ancestry.com. They have many free features which can help you trace a family tree. Also, they have a free application you can download. To use all of their research tools, there is a charge. Many cities/counties/states have birth/death/census records that you can view for little or no fee. Sorry, but there's little out there for free.

the mormon's are a gerat resource for that. I am not sure why they log family histories, Mormon or not, but they do. Search for their websites. My grandmother did that for our family tree.

There a loads of free search sites about. The best way to start is get all the info you can from relatives and go from there. I have been doing research for several months and found loads of info about the ancestors :) and it hasn't cost me a penny except time and printer ink. www.familysearch.org (Morman site)www.freebmd.rootsweb.com (Births Marriages and Deaths)(not a complete listing but they are getting there!) You don't need to register on either and the information is free. www.ancestory.com loads of info and you can have guest membership (free) www.cyndislist.com - thousands of links to search sites Google.co.uk is brilliant...try searching 'free genealogy'...literally thousands of links to sites in the uk and abroad. If you find a good site, save it into 'Favourites' cos you never find when you want to!! I'll warn you now that searching the family history is VERY addictive and exciting...shouting UREEKA at 3am when you find GGGG Granny and Grandpa, (which is what I did!!!!) is usally not appreciated!!!
