I have up-dated to version 11 on my windows XP computer as you have suggested, and tried to up-date on my laptop which runs on Vista, but it says that I cannot downgrade because my version is already 11.0.6000.6344.

I know this will not work because I have already tried, like I have said before. What about this free-codec as suggested by rojash?

It's worth a try and they are usually easy to install

Thanks to you both, but I have managed to crack it at last.

There is a small arrow under the Rip Tab.

Clicking on this brings down a Menu, click on Format, and select MP3.

Files are then ripped at MP3 format.

This was on my laptop which runs Vista and Windows Media Player 11.0.6000.6344.

I could weep. That is what I said on your other thread.

In your Windows Media Player click 'help' - top left of screen - and 'about'.

This will tell you the version.

To copy as mp3 I click on the little tiny arrow in the 'rip' tab, click on 'format' and choose mp3.

They should then burn, 'copy', as mp3

So sorry I made you cry Ethel, I didn't mean to.

Yes you did indeed tell me exactly that, but you see I have been working on two different computers, one PC upstairs in my office and one downstairs on my laptop.

The PC operates on Windows XP, and the Laptop on Windows Vista.

Now let me try and explain, when you told me to upgrade my Media player to 11 I did just as you told me on my PC (XP) but although I set it to rip at MP3s, it would not allow me to and came up with the error "Windows Media Player cannot rip one or more tracks from the CD" and it still will not allow me to. Yet on my Laptop (Vista) it will work perfectly as I said.

Still do not know what is wrong with the XP computer. Nothing so strange as Computers, even folk.

Have you tried downloading the codec as Rojash suggested?

Just another thought. Sorry if I'm off beam - your pc is capable of burning cds, isn't it?

Sorry you are a little under the weather Ethel, there is an awful lot about, but is reassuring to know you are there when needed.

Thanks for replying once again, but at last I have cracked it.

I went into the Bit Rate box and I noticed it was set at the "smallest" (128bps) so I tried the "best" (320), don't know how it makes a difference, but it worked.
