How would I find out what capacity external hard drive I would need for my Powerbook?

Your question makes no sense.

You don't need an external drive at all.

If you want to backup your internal drive, and thus want to check the size of your internal drive, then you can click your drive icon on the desktop (probably says Macintosh HD), and press cmd+I. That'll give you the capacity of the drive.

Your actual internal drive will be larger than the capacity however. For example, mine shows 111GB capacity, but it's a 120GB drive (this is due to the filesystem and binary/decimal conversion).
