help with a debate on another thread. At least two people have received emails from someone who never sent them. The emails had the senders address on them, but weren't ever sent by those people! Could someone please explain how this could happen? Thank you.

Couple of thoughts:

Firstly, it could be that I set up an account and put someone else's name on the email. Therefore you would see the email as coming from Jo Bloggs as opposed to Oneeyedvic.

Second thought, the hosts computer has been taken over by spammers and they are sending out emails using his computer

Third thought: Another person is physically logging on to the computer (eg a child or spouse)
I go with the first answer as the most likely.

Look closely - are the addresses EXACTLY the same, including capitals and punctuation marks? Could that capital i be a small l for example.
Morning oneey & Ethel, thank you for your answers, if you look at knobby's post on chatter bank, (hya figs and icy ) you will see how my problem started, thank you all for support, love megan. xxxxxxxxx
I've had a quick look at chatterbank and knobby has started several threads.

Which one is relevant?
This happens to me regularly - even getting mails sent to me from my own email address! I think there is another option and that is that the spammers have a method of lifting an email address they have got from a list and making it look as if it is coming from that stolen address..

Hi Ethel - this is the thread where Megan explained the email mystery. http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/ChatterBank/Que stion506344-3.html

Hope you could shed some light on it. Thank you.

Thank you everybody. I know Megan was perturbed by this happening. In my case, we have a friend who's in hospital in an induced coma - if that's the right expression - and unfortunately another friend appeared to receive quite a vile email from him - which couldnt've been the case. The email address seems correct, and the email contains information which makes it look as though he knows the recipient quite well, as references to previous emails have been made. Our poorly friend lives alone, and only he has access to his computer. Totally bewildering!
