How can people allow this to happen

This is REALLY bad. The whole injury is days old and rotten, the smell was appalling. Her skin is ripped all the way back to her neck and exposes the jaw bone totally. She is now at the vets and she is trying her best to save her, she has multiple injuries but the jaw is the worst....She has her mouth closed in that pic, what you see is the flap of skin hanging down.

She is a Staffie b1tch and not a young one either...
It goes on further to say this poor girl is a victim of dogfighting. She is lucky however and has been offered sanctuary and help via a rescue in ireland EGAR. The vet treatment is going to be extensive and expensive for the already stretched rescue. If you can help by making a donation however small, you can via paypal to [email protected] This lil girls name is Bernie and she could do with all the good thoughts you can send her.
Please say a prayer for this girl...

My heart is going ten to the dozen, I am absolutely sickened. What the hell possesses people to leave a dog in that state? They are just subhuman, they really are.
Poor girl. Dogfighting is sick, just sick, and I can't believe it can still go on. Sheer barbarity.
Get well, Bernie sweetheart. X

That picture's horrific, God only knows the pain that poor dog is in.
When you say "victim of dogfighting" do you mean she was actually used as a competitor (for want of a better word!), if so- wouldn't it be kindest to have her put to sleep? What kind of home would she be able to go to, if any, if she recovers?
I have to admit to being a bit 'foggy' with the ins and outs of dogs used for dog fighting, but can they ever be family pets? Providing they aren't around other animals?

jules, I know, sorry, I was just so shocked. I don't think any warning is enough for that! cruella, you guessed right, it's horrible. I am crying now.
Boo, you raise a really interesting point: dogs used for fighting are probably in a fighting frame of mind, so a very special home would be needed to take into consideration their needs. No other dogs nearby for example.
robotics, it's horrific isn't it? I had to look and re-look to make sure Bernie's mouth was shut. Poor baby.

lankeela, you are quite right. Is this why the 'bull breeds' are generally better around people than other dogs? I did read somewhere that they were bred to be good people dogs, as they would be handled quite a lot by their owner during and after a fight [unless left to die, of course :( ].
If photos like this were more widely seen, then perhaps people would feel more strongly about the issue.

All I could do was say "oh s**t" at least 1/2 dozen times...plus i had to look at her again when i read your post a second time. What kind ot sick beasts-(because surely they are not human) do this to the one animal that considers us to be the leader of its pack , that will lie with us and trusts us?? Such people would not survive if subjected to the same brutality....yet they would stand by and watch this. It is beyond belief.
Didn't fancy looking at the picture, some of the posts leave little to the imagination any way:-(
just happened to watch a U.S. pet rescue type programme though, they brought in 3 pitbulls who had been used for fighting, the vet said that although they seemed ok round people, their fighting instincts were so great that they couldn't risk them ever being given the chance of attacking another dog (or possibly a person) and they had no choice but to destroy them

I've just signed in, and don't even want to look at what I know would upset me. We own Staffordshire Bull Terriers, who are the most loyal and beautiful pets if treated right. They love to be around people, and are excellent with children - but tend not to like other dogs on their territory. Even so, ANY breed of dog can be like this. Dog fighting was once considered a "sport" as much as badger baiting, fox hunting and **** or bear fighting, but it's just a cruel and unnecessary evil, out of which heartless people can make money. I hope little Bernie survives and someone gives her a loving home.
