Capetown to Victoria Falls
What is the best time of year to make this journey i.e. avoiding the possibility of Victoria Falls being little more than a trickle and it being cold in South Africa.

"best time" "victoria falls"
produces plenty of advice.
This site says April:

This one broadens it out to 'March to May':

Of course, if you want to go when the river is in full flood, it means that you must visit during the rainy season (which might not be the best time of year for visiting other attractions in Zambia - assuming, of course, that you want to avoid the current problems in Zimbabwe). However, there's no real rainy season down in Cape Town. The weather statistics for April in Cape Town are very similar to those for London in July:

I think the peak period for the falls depends more on the rainy season in places like Angola, where it comes from; the wet season in Zimbabwe should be over by April but the floods should still be in full spate a while longer. I'm told there's not much trouble on the Zim side of the falls - it's a long way from Harare - but the Zam side has a lot better tourist infrastructure than it used to. There's a good 3-star hotel right by the falls

and others nearby in Livingstone. It's worth crossing the bridge into the other country, wherever you're staying. There is (or used to be) an excellent curio stall on the Zam side, with really good carvings on sale.
