Sewing machine Snapping the thread

Does anyone know why a sewing machine would shred and snap the thread from the top bit and also miss some stiches?

Please help

sounds like the tensioning is too tight, do you have a manual that will show you how to adjust the tension?

I have tried changing the tension, but it does seem tight, i can't find the manual and it's an old machine, and i can't find anyone who has instructions to download. I was wondering if i had missed something else. Do you know the normal setting for the tension? Maybe if i put it on the normal setting and work from there.

Check its threaded properly as this happened to me and it took me ages to get the thing right... happy sewing : )

When did you last change your needle and is it the right size for the fabric ? A blunt needle can cause the problems you are getting.

besides the tension being too tight, check to see if you have the stitch adjusted properly, make sure it's aligned properly. if all else fail try oiling your machine, then sew a few time on a scrap of cloth.

I found this, too. I have got it to work better but after a while it breaks the thread still. It's stopped missing stitches so far.

New needle, even went out a bought ball point and normal ones, tried cotton and poly, not sure where to oil, but cleaned inside (fluff) seems to be lubricated ok. I'll have a better look at the sites suggested, Thanks so far everyone. I'll be back

There are loads of downloadable manuals but they all charge Im afraid, around �5 average. Sorry I cant find a free one.

This site (sewingonline.co.uk) will let you view (for free) a manual online for your Singer 327K or, as weeal says above, you can download a pdf copy for just under �5. That's a lovely workhorse you have there, don't give up on it - it might just need servicing !

Can't beleive how great you all are, I have managed to get a copy of the pages i need.
The reason i needed the machine is i have pulled apart my daughters curtains to re line them with blackout lining, Luckly i only pulled apart one and i have used the old lining so she can sleep tonight. Thanks again Lou x

Could be that you are using a poor quality thread. Guttermanns is probably the best. Check that the needle has the flat of the shank at the back, and that it is pushed up as far as it will go. If it still misses stitches the timing may be out of adjustment, and a service needed.

Are you using the correct needle for the fabric you are using? Is the needle damaged or blunt? Have you threaded up the machine correctly? All of these can cause your problem.
