Cancun to Guatamala city... advice please!

After the great advice on the other unplanned bit of travelling I'm doing thought i'd post this too. (Anyone who knows about bolivia, argentina plz look at that too! its called "cusco to BA plz help") Anyway, me and a mate are going to be travelling from Cancun to Guatamala City in march, including belize on the way. We've got 3-4 weeks to do it and we're doing it on the cheap. Just hoping for some advice on how best to travel around, good things to do and see and general travelling wisdom. Cheers genti

There's a robust and cheap bus system in Mexico and buses regularly ply up and down the coastal route south of Cancun down to Chetumal, the nearest large town to the Belize border. Once you get out of the main tourist traps near Cancun, things are less busy and more Mexican. The Mayan settlement on the coast at Tulum are a must, and I would also recommend the vast Sian Ka'an biosphere area just to the south of this.
To get to Belize you take a bus from Chetumal to Corozal, walk across the bridge that froms the boundary and pick up a bus the other side. Its about a 5hr bus ride from there to Belize City.
