206 dashboard warning light

A new warning light has just come on in my 206.
According to the manual it's the 'Coolant Low Warning Light'. This is probably a stupid question but what does that mean? Does it mean the radiator? But I thought radiators were sealed units nowadays. It comes on for the first minute or so of driving but then goes off so it can't be too serious.

I believe you`re thinking of the battery when you mention sealed unit. The radiator coolant has dropped below the sensor thus illuminating the warning lamp. However, as the engine warms up, so does the coolant making it expand & rising above the level sensor. So, referring to your handbook, top up the coolant (50/50 water/antifreeze is good with alloy engines) when the engine is cold. Don`t try it when hot as it may not do you or the engine any good!

I have no antifreeze and wouldn't using tap water be a bad idea? Especially as I'm in such a serisouly hard water area.

The amount of tap water required will probably not be enough to introduce any significant amount of limescale. Most service stations sell antifreeze, be very careful not to get any on paintwork as unlike screenwash, it will mark it.

If the level hasnt dropped much, just putting in water wont lower the antifreeze strength enough to worry about.
