should have said there are two As S as a N questions& I've already got Mazies answer . Thank you for answering all the same. Can anyone think of another one please? Also I've heard of as sweet as sugar, honey etc,but never a nut. I once had to explain a simile I'd never heard of in an exam, and I've rather gone off them ever since! Also, idioms depend on which part of the country you come from!
sweet as a nut- one explanation. In nature nuts are sweet - in comparison with many other foods. Prior to the introduction of refined sugar the only really sweet thing was honey. Next down the line were fruits, berries and some nuts, eg chestnut - hence the expression.
Sweet as a nut is a very common expression but is generally used to describe things that are going well- such as the enine is running as sweet as a nut
Thank you all for your replies. Thank you especially to burnhal for taking the trouble to explain how the simile came about. You learn something new every day.Do you think the compilers will be lenient as to where an answer is placed when the clues have been duplicated, or have we got to take pot luck and put their exact choices in their exact spot? If we have, I shall be sick as a parrot!
