As a previous user of both formats, I'll give you my personal opinion on the software packages.
Both of the titles are very good and more or less, have the same features. However, I have found that Nero is more stable than Roxio and since the revamp Ahead made to its Nero 6 version, in my opinon, is the better of the two.
Nero seems (don't ask me why....) to give a smoother output on DVD authoring and with more options now on the "Burn Image" option, covers more imige file types. It may be just my hardware (which is pretty high spec), but Roxio did not seem to give as good quality on DVDs.
CD writing is basically on-par for both suites, both music and data files. MP3 creation is also good for both.
The most anoying feature I found about Roxio was the "Drop To Disk" feature, although this can be disabled within the main program options.
Again, the Jewel Case creator programs for both titles are pretty much the same, although personally, I found Nero had that little bit more on design input and ease of use than Roxio.
Finally, as already mentioned, Nero is slightly cheaper and a smaller file than Roxio. However, with the add ons for Nero (i.e. Nero Vison Express etc.), this can pump the file sizes up a tad.
