Whats the history of  German Sheperds? What was the original purpose of the dog?

Herding sheep in Germany, to be precise Alsace, hence the othe name,  Alsations. Like most sheepdogs in Europe they had to to keep off predators like wolves so they were bred to defend the flock rather more than British sheepdogs who didn't need the same aggressiveness
Im not sure of the exact history. But im cruising this site and im bored. German Shepherds as other pure race (pedigree) dogs in the Medieval Ages represented nobility. Only the nobility was able to own pure breed dogs, and if their dogs had pups, they would either give them away to nobles or kill them so the peasants wouldnt. It was a symble of power.. This can be seen in The Patriot with Mel Gibson and the two Great Dane's...
