kids programme from the 80's

Does anyone else in the whole world recall a childrens series which involved an old santa-claus type man some kids a flying fire engine type vehicle and a quest to find diamond encrusted salamanders? Beginning to think it was some kind of bizarre recurring dream, am i mad?

the only thing that rings a bell (and is probably of no help!!!) is a programme about a big red bus. The song went..."theres a big red bus way up in the sky, everyone said it would never ever fly". It was about a bunch of kids in the flying bus. If this helps let me know and i'll ask my sister who is bound to remember it!!!!!!!
