The water is syphoning from the sink to the washing machine.

Your waste must be plumbed into the sink waste which is not an ideal situation.

Look at the waste pipe and you will probably find that the pipe is lower down than the waste trap. Can you raise the washing machine pipe by for example fixing a hook under the worktop and hanging the machine pipe from it.

look at this article it may help

this has only recently started to happen the 4 years have been fine !!!
Maybe the pipe has dropped.
Or at the connection to the sink waste you have a non return valve which has failed and should be replaced.

well thanks for ur answers i have now done that so hopefully it will be ok and i will know what to do if it happens agin ! also do you or anyone know why there is water is the soap powder drawer (softner compartment )) all the time would this be anything to do wiv what we have just fixed ?
Many years ago I had this problem. My flexible hose from the washing machine is connected to the waste trap of my sink, and all I did to cure it was raise the hose and support it so water from the sink couldn't flow down it.
