electrical wiring colours

my new light socket has a wiring diagram- with red, blue and green/yellow wires indicated. My electric wiring has wires within which are red, blue and solid green. Is the green the same as the green/yellow?

How was the old one wired? It used to be green for earth (Same as green and yellow). If its a two was switch, the person who wired it could of used it for something other that earth. Get your self a multimeter and check it. If your asking these questions that get somebody compitant to do it.

Hang on a mo, wiring colours for flexible cables has been brown, blue and green/yellow for some time. The house wiring WAS red, black and green/yellow with yellow (solid)and blue also identifying phase colours or lives if you like, but is now brown, blue and green/yellow with black and grey the other phase colours, are you keeping up?

From you question I think that the info cannot be correct unless you are writing from somewhere outside the UK.

turboped - the colours definitely were as i said in my question! and i am in the UK, which is why i couldnt work it out. Anyway i have wired the new switch up putting the green with the green and yellow seperate wire, like it was before, and it works! and my house hasnt burnt down (yet)!!

Red, blue and green was a colour code used many, MANY years ago, the insulation is most likely getting brittle and turning to dust. I'd say you should be looking at a rewire.
