I do not know anything about computers therefore I am in need of some help please.
After a previous question I posted on Saturday, I think I have downloaded Comodo Firewall.
My question is, how can I check this. How do I know it is there & working?

Well it won't be, if all you did was download it. After downloading the installation file, you need to run it to install the program. (Don't tell me - you don't know where you downloaded it to).
Once installed, you will know that it's working.

I'm not a stupid person but why can't the computer give instructions in an simple language?

Eventually a window comes up saying Download complete. then RUN / OPEN FOLDER / CLOSE...so I click on RUN.
Then another pops up - WinZip Self-Extractor, which states Error 0 running command.\CFP.Setup_3.0.15.277_xp_Vista_x64.exe
then there is an OK which I click. The process then starts again.
Please will someone literally spell it out to me what I have to do?

Judging by the name of the file "...Vista_x64.exe" you have elected to download the version for 64 bit Vista - which I very much doubt that you have. Go back to the site and download the version for Vista 32 bit.
