I am one of the senior members here and every one used it..this is back in the'60s in the States. I am sure that the 3rd usage was what was meant. Language is always changing ..and some times we need to look at how each individual may mean things. It is not an excuse-but we all use words that may be seen by someone, somewhere as unacceptable.
irene bb i did not realise i was being touchy , i really do not care what people call me, have you read the thread that we are refering to? it is just that legend was going ape at whiffey about being insensative towards diabled people and then he called knobby a gimp, i was trying to point out that the word gimp was not apptopriate in the thread and a word that could not offend some people could have been used instead, like you old ****** or ********, gimp means different things to different people and can be misunderstood.
Hi Jacko! how are you??
I have always taken the term 'gimp' to be derrogatory, I have never paid much attention to Pulp Fiction and couldn;t have said it was part of that film, legend bandies that word about like a 'term of enderment' but he has used it when he has been adusing people too , like he calls women 'doll' and that I think is ignorant and outdated too.
He is always right, ot thinks he is, he likes to make out he is the saviour of out souls and he will twist anything you write on here to make out you are a freak, evil, lowest of the low etc.
I can't abide the man, he is an all arse and will try to insult and undermine and lie about anything he picks up on , he has made so many bombastic and outragious attacks on people on this site, he is disgusting.

Never heard of it used in that term but since you are disabled then you obviously would be sensitive to it.
Just much the same as my aunty and cousin are sensitive to being called deaf and dumb (yeah they do know the difference) cos they arent dumb - that is they are aware a noise comes out their mouths -but dumb is a term used for being stupid and there it perpetuates so I would just say grin and bear it -it wasnt double standards.I hasten to add they have never equated the 2 -it just quite easily sprung to mind and I daresay there are lots of words with differing meanings.

My great Uncle Wallace was born deaf and dumb, he was sent to the Royal School for the deaf in Preston which was a charity school, he lived in, his parents, my great grandparents, lived on a farm above Todmorden, I have two letters he wrote home to my great grandparents in 1924 and 1925, he was only 12, his writing was beautiful and he wrote in such a polite and endearing manner, it must have broken my great grandmas heart when he wrote :
'I am sorry that you and father cannot come to the open day to meet all my friends here, but I know the train travel is very costly'
He lived until he was 75 and after being trained as a carpenter he made beautiful individual carved pieces for churches and posh houses.
He was always deaf and dumb, and my family always referred to him as deaf and dumb,

no B00, I say what I see!!! the man is an all arse, end of, and i know I have to be right, because it is my opinion, and noone is allowed to argue it nor openly debate it nor disagree........oh no, sorry, that's legend's mantra, not mine lol but i don;t really care what people respond cos they have not put up with ths out and out sh1te from the git that i have
Where did that come from Dot -jings.
Did your Great Uncle make a noise out his mouth albeit not formed words?
If he didnt then he was indeed dumb -if he did -then he wasnt simple. Its an old fashioned term so i daresay it was used in his day.Deaf people generally prefer to be referred to as deaf nowadays.
I wasnt opening up a debate by the way -if thats the way youi refer to deaf people then thats fine.
Its like calling someone Spastic-now my mums sister was a Spastic (Cerebral Palsy -that is now used as derogatory term
I think we all know when someone is name calling and im afraid whats been mentioned isnt.
O what a happy buch we are tonight -lets keep it that way.

O ND -change the bleeding record you arent involved in enough posts as ND to be even worthy of a comment about him.
Go back to your other name -see this gang culture and its all the same person -just bloody stand and be counted as yourself -at least i take the rough with the smooth just being me - at least I am a strong enough character to stand alone.
Its just all so pettey and trivial -I could really belt some of you round the lugs -then agaian I could be really jealous that tit for tat is all you have to bother about.
Get a life -- in fact be greatful you have one -now grow up.
