Thousands of years ago when early mankind experienced things such as thunder & lightning, volcanoes, earthquaqes, severe weather, comets, total eclipses..etc they devoloped a presumption that these things were controlled by unseen forces which later developed into various 'gods' (the gods were pleased or angry depending on whether good or bad things were happening, and all sorts of explinations were made up for various phenomena).
Closer to our time the Bible was written in an effort to control the masses: keep them living in fear of the almighty, one-and-only God with a bunch of stories, which all had a convenient moral to them, telling the people that their gods weren't real and it turned out to be the best PR stunt ever! Now we have a scientific explination for most things, in my opinion (I don't force it upon anyone, but seeing as you asked) believing in God (or gods)is just as ridiculous as believing in the Tooth fairy or Santa (when we stop believing in these things, why do we continue to belive in God?) - Much better to have faith in yourself & your own abilities.
perhaps we all are a piece of god. United spiritually as plant, mineral and animal we are a collective that was once One. For instance, the big bang theory was once a single mass,it exploded, and the debris expands (making our solar system ,life and all in between)and eventually reversing and collapsing back on its self (the universe)and becoming One again. Everythings a cycle. The only thing left is, is to belive in your self. And that's the mening of life.
I think that's a little deeper then i initally ment to get.

I am very sorry BillyPilgrim that people are so lonely that they believe there is no God. There is a God and hopefully you believe that as well. God is someone not to be grasped by the human mind therefore we do not have all of the answers. He was not made up by humans at any point in time. Many people have set out to prove there is no God and proved themselves wrong. I hope you can do the same. I have personally experienced a relationship with him and he has blessed beyond my imagination too many times to consider it a fluke. I pray that you too have more sense to believe we are not the only beings in this world (unless you too believed we derived from fish). What makes more sense? Fish to human or there is a God? I'll leave that one up to you.
bobbyx,
I don't think you are lonely, but to self proclaim yourself an athiest is pretty hardcore. You are really saying that you know for a fact that there is no God...this means you are the only person on earth that is this all knowing you can not disprove there is no God. Let me put it another way,if I was to say there is no gold in China then I would have to know everything there is to know about china..like whats inside all the rocks in China and if any person in china has a gold filling or if a old man has a gold coin tucked away in his basement. There is no way I could make that statement so for you to say to yourself and anyone you proclaim that God does not exsist than you have to know everything about everything..not possible. You could say that your agnostic because that would mean you don't know if ther is a God. I would also consider the consequences in saying He does not exsist, when you die what then??? I would suggest picking up a Bible that is written to not use confusing words"life application-the living translation"and read it all the way through and ask him to show you if he exsist-if He can part seas and raise the dead he can turn a self proclaimed "atheist"into a believer.I hope you dont take offense and that this leads you to read his book

None taken!
I am, and always will be an athiest.
True, I can't disprove there is no God, but by the same token, you cannot prove that there is. I base my belief on rational thought and scientific proof and I see little point in refering to a book of tall stories (some of which may well be based on actual historic events) to tell me how to think. Your analogy about China is flawed, as I have seen and can touch gold, and can present it to you as proof that it exists; so I can say that it is most likeley that China has gold. I could argue that china has no 'flying traffle beasts', because I just made them up, they are imaginary - just as I believe your God to be.
You ask about the consequences of when we die - That's the one of the main reasons the Human race clings on to their superstitions and belief in God, because they find death too hard to bear, so parents tell their kids 'granny's gone to heaven' to ease the pain (fair enough, it is probably nicer than saying 'granny's worm-food' but the kids carry on believing this and the cycle continues), and what if (for sake of argument) that this is actually heaven and we've been somewhere even worse before, this could be the top rung of the ladder!
As for 'parting the seas and raising the dead' - Exaggerated stories, it's in our nature to make things sound more dramatic than they are.
Anyway, I hope you take no offence either - I just wan't you to know that there are many people who believe that there is no God, heaven or hell (to put it in simple terms) just as strongly as you believe that there is. We tend not to get together every sunday or go door-to-door to spread the logical word!
We created god. The reason for this is because we are scared of what comes after we die. It is our nature to be scared of that of which we do not know. Therefore we must make up stories in order for us to be happy and so we can rest. There is no heaven and there is no hell, we just made tehse places up so that we have hope that we have a greater purpose. Well guess what there is nothing after we die there is nothing after we leave this place it is just a fairy tale they told us.
