anyone know about dsl line (broadband) - how it works, please

a few days ago my phone line stopped working and the broadband wouldn't load, it kept saying dsl line is disconnected. (this is 1st time I knew the broadband was connected to the phone line lol, why is it called "wireless" if there's a wire.). but yesterday, if I turned on the netopia modem (that has flashing lights on it) it would work for 10-20 mins then the internet light would go red, and stop working. no videos would load then today videos would load and it stayed connected for over 2 hours. the phone line is still down. how does that work? am I feeding off someone else's connection. my brother also has broadband (not connected to mine) in an office next to the house, is it possible I'm picking up on his connection? thanks

Sounds like you've got a high resistance connection somewhere on the line, or one leg of the pair is disconnected. In these circumstances the phone wouldn't work, as it needs a solid DC path.

Broadband doesn't use DC at all, but radio frequencies from about 26 - 1100 kHz carried over the phone line copper pair. These frequencies can still work over a high resistance joint, and sometimes even over a disconnection.

When the phone line is repaired, the broadband should also be OK.
