Unwanted hi-fi
15 Answers
Hi oh knowledgeable ones.......
I have recently upgraded my hi-fi separates set up and now have some fully functional but a bit old equipment (amplifier, cassette player and record deck, all about 25 years old).... They still work absolutely fine and will probably carry on working - I just wanted *better sounding* equipment and had a bit of spare cash....
Does anyone have any idea where I can get rid of my old gear.... I'm not really after any money for them but they are definitely too good to shove on the tip. Because they are electrical, none of the charity shops are able to take them but there must be someone/where I can give them to.

I had a Sugden tuner, it stopped working, but was rather stylish in a 70s sort of way, hand-made in Yorkshire och aye the noo, but not destined to be of any value for another 30 years, and therefore a space-occupying lesion. I left if on the front fence and within 24 hours it had gone.
I bought a new DVD recorder and HD TV recently (orgasm!) and left the old VHS player on the front fence, it went too, but took a little longer.
Stick it outside with a label, This Still Works.

Whiffey, you dont even need a label whaere I used to live, you could leave a broken ironing board outside and it would be gone.
my neighbour 2 doors up had 5 kids and when the council were clearing a house opposite the kids were stealing the carpet that was thrown in the skip by the workmen for their house, also the dad was in the skip itself looking for some occasional furniture and stuff..

Actually, in truth, I have just bought a new HD TV and it is absolutely mind-blowingly brilliant, and I saw one of the people from next door and asked if he wanted a TV and DVD player. He looked like he was going down to Londis, but when I gave him my old TV and DVD player he said, "this is my lucky day and disappeared indoors"
I got a small warm glow from that.
I won't bore you with details of the new one, except that it is FABBY FANTASTIC, perfect for Masterchef and Grand Prix.

Thanks Boo, I had forgotten about freecycle..
FG - Oxfam (and other charity) shops don't take electrical equipment any more, as I mention above, unless the gear has been tested and certified for safety (Government regs).
Whiffey - I did think of just leaving them outside - I've actually put the original manuals and a note stating that they are in working order in plastic bags and stuck these on the top of each piece but I would be annoyed if I found bits of the equipment strewn across the road tomorrow morning, I'd rather they went to a good home.
I suppose I could advertise them for sale or take them to one of the cash generator stores as you suggest, Wee Al, but I can't imagine they have much value nowadays.
Freecycle sounds good to me !

Well, I am dead impressed with Freecycle (Thanks again, Boo!).... 38 responses last night alone and another 22 this morning...... I have just dropped off the hi-fi to a lovely young man who lives not too far away - he appeared to be thrilled to bits with it and I'm pleased that it's not gone into landfill....
