Renaming Digital Photos

I read ages ago in Computeractive magazine that there was a way to rename multiple photos (jpeg files) at once. As anyone with a digital camera will know the pics have names like PO0001 - PO0099 and you can store them on your pc, erase them from your camera, and take more pics.. but they will have the same filenames. When uploading these there is a risk that the original pics (files) will be overwritten. Without having to go through loads of back issues, does anyone know how multiple renaming of files is done?  I am running Windows XP pro.

All you should have to do is highlight all the images you want to rename and then right click on one of them and rename it.  It should then rename all files with (1), (2) etc after them.

Yep- move your cursor so its next to a file (not on it) right click- hold- and pull the window around your selected files, un-click and then rename.

Can you not set up the camera so it doesn't reset the range of numbers? Even if this facility is not available, you can fool the camera by not deleting the highest-numbered photo each time.

Thanks everyone.  Actualy how to rename multiple pics is in printed once again.. in this month's Computeractive magazine. The pics were from my recent trip to Canada & USA and I have now renamed them by highlighting them all then clicking rename.. they are now called NorthAmerica.jpg .. NorthAmerica(1).jpg .. NorthAmerica(2).jpg .. etc.
