I'm wearing a brown dress to a wedding. I was planning on wearing either a long dark purple coat or a long black coat - would either be ok or would they be too 'bulky' for a wedding since there isn't a cloakroom.

I am sure there will be a discreet corner that people can put their coats - there will be lots of people with the same dilema! Have you got / thought about a woollen wrap. Hopefully it won't be too cold (you probably won't be outside for long) and that would be easy to fold and put on the back of your chair or under a table! Hope you have a nice time whatever you decide.
I would go with the black rather than the purple, to wear with brown. But also, have a back-up. If the weather is mild like today, you won't want to be too hot in a big coat. have you got a nice jacket that would go? Then you could just put it on the back of your chair inside.

Hi folks and thanks for the answers. I don't have a smart enough jacket so I'm going to go with the black coat. Now all I need to organise are my shoes......
