Ray - I'm trying to get hold of a NICEIC approved electrician. Went on their site and phoned around. Seems their all busy for quite a few weeks. Just want a wall light fitted. Do you think thety just can't be bothered to come out for such a small job or are NICEIC approved sparks generally a lot busier because they go through the proper channels. Tempted to get oone that's not approved but don't really want to take the risk with the house insurance ect ... By the way, what's the average cost of fitting a wall light?
Hiya skyep, my hubby worked for the local electricity board for 30 years and is able to do any electrical work up to a very high standard, unfortunatley he hasn't got the right papers thats is now needed for any new electrical installation. Therefore although this new legislation is a safe guard for joe public against cowboy electricians and rightly so, men like my hubby who are very adept and safety concious cannot now do any work other than change a light bulb. To answer your Q about fitting a wall light this all depends whether this is a new installation or whether the wiring is already in place any way depending on the work involved my husband says the cost would be between 40 cheapest or 100 ball part figure dearest.
Thanks puss! Basically we bought a two armed wall light thinking we could run it from an electrical socket near the skirting and chanelling it in to the wall. But apparently my son said we cant do that?
Hello skyep, just come on A/B, if you just want the light fitted to existing wires anybody with basic DIY skills could do it for you, to just connect a fitting you don't have to be registered, so is it just that sort of thing you mean? shouldn't cost much if it is, please let me know, Ray xx
Hello skyep, just noticed what you put, what you could do to save calling in a sparky is do as you were going to do, but wire it in flex and put a plug top on the end of the flex, you could then just plug it in to socket, failing that if you want it wired in properly, Go to the ECA site Or Napit, put in your postcode and it should come up with sparkies in your area. Ray xx
Hello skyep, have alook at this link, you could bury the flex in some oval conduit and put plug top on the flex and plug the lead into the socket, but obviously it would mean that to turn light on it would be controlled by a socket, this way you can get anybody to do the work because it is not fixed wiring. hope I am being clear on this, hard to put into words what I mean, Ray xx
