A farthing was a fourth of an old penny . Smallest coin of the realm back in the year dot when I were but a lass.

You could get a farthing chew or five chews for a Penny ...early sort of Bogoffs. Or a sticky bun from the bakers if my memory (such as it is these days) serves me correctly for a penny three farthings . Things were priced up in farthings Eg ...something might cost sixpence three farthings written as 6�d.
