The Hobbit

With Peter Jackson making this for 2010, do you believe that characters from Lord of the Rings with reappear with poetic licence??
LotR were excellent movies, but took some liberties and certainly refashioned the ending from the books.
From memory only Bilbo, Gollum and Gandalf appear.
Would you wish to see more LotR characters in the movie? I see no reason why Gimli for example can not be one of the thirteen dwarves.
Or should Jackson be true to the book?

One point though - Jackson was fired when he sued over LOTR royalties. Seems Guillermo Del Toro will be in the driver's seat:

Bilbo is in his 50s in The Hobbit so they might want a new actor but I reckon Ian Holm could do it. Gandalf and Gollum are easy, no reason to recast. Gimli is Gloin's son so Mr Rhys Davies could be in for another outing. Legolas is an undying elf so with a bit of poetic licence he could be introduced to the episode in Thranduil's palace - cameo for Orlando Bloom? If they stick to the book, however, and I hope they do, I think that's about it.
Films have to "take liberties" with books - a straight transfer would be boring because it's a different medium. Most of the dwarves in The Hobbit have almost no characterisation, so expect big changes there.
Legolas is Thranduil's son, so no reason why he cannot appear as one of the Mirkwood elves.
Mr Rhys Davies may return, though he did vow never to wear prosthetics again.
Gandalf makes reference to an order in The Hobbit that implicitly involves Saruman (and Galadriel and Elrond, I think), so we may see Saruman again - perhaps before he was corrupted.
