I was just reading the thread on chat up lines and was thinking about how my husband first told me that he 'loved' me.  It was hilarious.  I wonder if anybody else has any stories to tell.

You can tell I'm bored!  I'm back to work tomorrow after a long time off sick, so I'm making the most of today.

Bangkok - Hhmm petrol!

Anyway, my husband was always telling me & showing me how much he loved me & although we knew we would marry me one day - it all happed a bit sooner than expected. My was overdue & I'd had the usual blood test to see if I was pregnant. I had to call the Doc a week later for the results - yes it was positive! I was absolutely horrified & burst into tears over the phone to the Doc & dreaded having to go home to tell Mum & Dad. Before I walked home, I phoned my then boyfriend to tell him the news, to which he replied "Oh brilliant, that means we can get married then!" I took that as a proposal & we married 8 weeks later! That was forty years ago - so it worked! (Now you all know another little secret of mine)!

Whoops:

* Ignore 'me' after marry.

* happened not happed!

* I not my was overdue!

We'd been living together for about 6 months (and we had met because I moved into his house as a tenant - that's another story!).  I had known that he liked me for a couple of months, but understandably didn't want to jump into a relationship with my landlord (!) who was also 12 years older than me, though I really liked him.  Finally I decided to risk it, and told him that I also was attracted to him.  First thing he said after we kissed: "So, are you going to want kids?"

(His last relationship had broken up because he really wanted kids, and she didn't, and he didn't want to get too attached to me if it was going to be the same thing.  I was 22, fresh out of college, had no clue if I wanted kids yet, and he really freaked me out!)

Fast-forward several years later.  We had always said that we weren't going to get married, because it was just an institution, we were in a committed relationship and didn't need the state to sanctify it, etc.  At some point, I realized it wasn't really true, and that I wanted to have the official recognition of our commitment.  We had a particularly bad fight one night - about him never cleaning the cat boxes when it was his turn - and something about the nice way we resolved the fight made me feel all gooey - so I proposed to him!  The next day I went out and got him one of those candy popsicle rings and presented it to him on bended knee.  We've been together 8 years, married for 3.

I remember grasping my beloved's hands in mine, and talking earnestly and at great length. What I didn't realise was that she was holding an After Eight at the time.

I'm a bit like cidermonkey, I wasn't drunk but after a week of seeing eachother every single day (he was skiving off work, I had just left school) I got out the car one day and said 'Love you' without even thinking. He replied 'And you too'. Then it hit us what we'd both said but we meant it and moved in together 2 months later.

The proposal was equally stunningly romantic. His brother had come to see him and I was in the bedroom. He gave me a hug and said 'Will you marry me?' and I said yes, then we had another cuddle and he left the room to play Playstation with his brother! We kept it a secret for another 2 months because we'd only been together a year. We are still married 3 years later though and still happy. I think that big gestures don't necessarily mean much and I wouldn't change a thing.

My hubby and I had been going out with each other for a few months and used to write each other little letters all the time - mainly just silly things and just to say that we were thinking of each other. Neither of us had got around to saying those three little words and I didn't want to say them first , so decided to wait and see if he felt the same before I said them. One day he came to meet me for a night out and as we began chatting , he suddenly seemed to take a turn - clutching at his chest. I went into a blind panic and thought that he was taking a heart attack and as he loosened his jacket , I saw that he had written a little letter on red card , cut it into the shape of a heart and stuck it to his chest ! When I read it , he told me that he loved me and that his heart ached when he wasn't with me. I didn't know whether to kiss him for being romantic or clout him round the earhole for scaring the hell out of me ! He cringes now when I remind him of that , saying that he was young and stupid but I was really touched by that.
I proposed to my hubby on 29th February 1996 - just over one year of us first dating. It was a Leap Year and according to tradition , women are supposed to propose to their men on 29th February in a Leap Year. So I took the bull by the horns and decided to do just that. I arranged for a love heart shaped cake to be made at the bakers with the words 'Marry me' on it , his name and lots of little red hearts. I booked a table at our favourite restaurant and left the cake with the waiters and the instruction to put on 'our song' after our dessert and bring the lit cake out. It would have all gone like a dream had one of the waiters not been so excited about the proposal that he forgot to bring the cake out ! As we were nearing the end of our dessert , I was running out of excuses to stall for time and when I kept smiling over to the waiter to attract his attention , he just kept winking at me ! Suffice to say , hubby started to think that I was making eyes at the waiter and took the hump ! Eventually light dawned with the waiter and he leapt into action. As the cake was brought out and with our song playing , I got down on one knee and proposed. Hubby was so taken aback that for a moment he just sat there speechless and I felt like an idiot in a packed restaurant. I asked him to say something and he just pulled me up into his arms and said , yes - of course I will ! Everyone cheered and we were given a complimentary bottle of bubbly by the waiters. We married a short while afterwards and have been together ever since ...... for our sins !!!

I hope you have time to read all these responses while you are back to work!

While we were dating, my wife said it first. I replyed with, "I can't say that right now" because I did not want her to think I was only saying it because she said it. The very next day I told her that I loved her. She still teases me because I 'did not' love her one day and I did love her the next.

Well let's see... My hubby and I at the time had known eachother for barely a month, and one day we were in my car when he started trying to massage my neck as I was driving (first physical contact). I wasn't even thinking of him in that way and the first thought in my head was "oh no, not another one" because I always seemed to attract old horny perverts. Fast forward several weeks, after some really great times together, and getting to see what a great guy he was, when (in my car again) he said he loved me. I turned to him, and with his romantic expression mirrored in my face, I replied in all sincerity "thanks". What was I gonna do, lie? That's what I said to him when I could see his disappointment. Well we grew even closer over the next few months - especially after having been separated by circumstance, keeping contact through letters and phone and realizing how I really felt about him. We started living together. Now fast forward another 6 months or so, we were on family vacation and at this gift shop in an amusement park there was a rack with a bunch of cheap little $5 rings. He called me over and said "Hey, let's get married", I was so elated, we exchanged rings on a little boat, and I didn't even know if I should believe him or not. After a few months of him refering to me as his fiancee I started really letting myself believe it, and we . We discussed when we would get married for real, but when I became pregnant we planned everything for a year earlier so we could enjoy our wedding and honeymoon before the baby arrived. Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Best wishes for your return to work tomorrow FP! Let us know how everything goes.
Good luck on your return to work today FakePlastic - don't work too hard. -xx-

I proposed to my wife on Christmas day (no, it wasn't nicola_red!).

I didn't know her ring size so I bought a Barbie Princess ring from Toys'R'Us (beautifully presented of course, in a pink Barbie heart shaped box) and sitting amongst all the wrapping paper on the bed I popped the question wearing nothing but a Santa hat & a big smile.

Thanks for all the really lovely and amusing answers.  Well work wasn't so bad (I work in a call centre).  However, we have been banned from using the internet during working hours, so I can't catch up with you lot.  I don't get to use it at break times because we are provided with free meals in a restaurant and I'm not giving that up, even for my AB friends.  I'm just trying to catch up a little now before I go in to work again.
