How can a footballer have a WIFE & a GIRLFRIEND? Surely it should be a Wife OR a Girlfriend.

Hehe, I always thought that WAG stood for Wives and Girlfriends... a sort of generic term for (straight) footiemen's partners...

It can't be Wife OR Girlfriend because then the initals would be *** and that is politically incorrect. I think this point was raised on QI not so long ago....?

Only came on here to get the answer to a crossword question and now I am addicted! Ought to have a support group. AnswerBank Anonymous. ABA. Or is that taken?
the phrase was coined during the world cup when the newspapers wanted to comment on the collective behaviour of the women the footballers took abroad with them - they called them footballers wives and girlfriends, hence footballers WAGs for short. What is really annoying me, as a stickler for correct language usage, is the newspapers now just calling them WAGs and not footballers WAGs, or saying someone is a WAG - as you noted in your original question this isn't possible!!
