Who is performing this song? I think it was originally written and recorded by Billy Joe Royal and then Deep Purple recorded it - but who is this on the ad?

Definately the 1969 Deep Purple pre-Gillan used in the ad.

The 97 Kula Shaka one is a lot faster in tempo ans was used on another car ad for a 4x4. possibly the Rav4
