Where is my daddy?

I am not sure the last question went through so here it is again: I had been told since my dad died htat he had been buried. When I went for his gravesite recently I was finally told he had actually been cremated. How do I find him? This is very painful for me and I would apprecioate some help.....please

If he died in the UK There are two things you could look for, a civil registration entry of death, which would narrow down to a district where possibly he would be buried, and an entry in the burial register if he had a religious ceremony for the funeral.

If he died in the US you need to look at the social security death index, which would again give you a location of death, however, with cremations it is of course not always the case that the remains are interred at all, whether at the crem or in a churchyard, sometimes the ashes are kept with the deceased's family.

This is a British based site so you might not get much help. My Girlfriend had to find her uncle's grave a few years age, after only finding out he had died after a year. We foung out where he was buried by contacting the local Funeral Directors ( I think you call them morticians) to where he lived. This finally gave us the location of his grave, although it was in the town of his late wifes family not the nearest to where he lived. If he had been cremated, and you could find out where it was carried out they may have information on where the remains were taken.

In line with dot's always helpful advice, check with the cemetery's governing board. I live in the U.S. and almost all (except for very old, very small country cemeteries) have a governring board, usually at the County level. That board should have records on the burials. It's entirely possible that your father was cremated and the remains, in a small container, were buried at his gravesite. I attended a funeral this last fall wherein that occurred. This is often recorded at the time of intenment. Additionally, try to determine what mortuary or crematorium provided the service. They'll have records to whom the remains were released. If it's been within the last few years, check your local newspaper's obituary archives.
