ABS light stays on

I inadvertantly allowed the battery on my 1994 Rover 623i automatic to run down. After recharging the battery the ABS light stays on when the car is moving. What would cause it to stay on? Does it mean that the ABS is permanently on? Does it affect the brake performance? I know it has to be rectified as my mechanic says it is an mot failure item. Would running down the battery cause it? The inside of the car was quite damp after standing for a long time.

Thanks

the brakes wont fail, only the abs will go off and you will be left with normal brakes. sometimes we had this problem on vauxhall models and once you gave them a wee run the light went off. probably worth getting checked out though.
