Failed MOT
11 Answers
My MOT has expired and I took my car for a MOT test - it failed the test. I want to get a second opinion from another garage - Can I drive the car to the other garage with a prebooked test even though I have no MOT AND it has failed its test? I was under the impression you can as long as you have a prebooked test appointment......?

I am not sure on this but............
Now the MOT tests are computorised the next garage you go to will have access to all previus MOT reports done on your car on their computer, this will include the one you have just failed.
Your other option is to ask for an investigation on the garage by the dvla for failing your vehicle when it is Ok.

also you can get a second opinion no problem but only the garage that issued the failure has the required access to go in and then print a pass once the repairs are carried out. the third party garage can view the information on the database but are prohibited from amending the information that a previous garage have uploaded onto the database. it has to be the original tester who carried out the mot as each tester was issued their own uniqe smart card to use the mot computeristaion system.
I think a big issue here is that previously if your car failed the MOT (prior to computerisation), you could take the car elsewhere, and it could either pass, or fail on even more items.
This is because whilst the level of competance amongst testers is generally the same, each tester may view the description of what would pass or fail in the testers handbook slightly differently.
By not allowing you to take the car for a test elsewhere after a fail (although this isn;t something that I had heard about), I suppose this stops you going to a more leniant tester when your car clearly shouldn;t have passed in the first place

I think you can take your car anywhere at anytime - you just may not be happy with the results lol
Last year my car failed and the garage couldnt do the repairs for another couple of weeks, I took it to another garage and they repaired the 3 faults and as I wanted an MOT quickly I said they may as well re-test it so I get my MOT when I picked it up. No such luck
The 2nd garage fixed the original 3 faults and then when they re-tested they found another 2 things wrong and failed it. I then took it to the first garage and they passed it ok and didnt pick up on the other 2 things wrong.
A previous year I did the same trick and the 2nd garage found something which was potentially very dangerous (like my wheel almost falling off) but the first garage didnt spot it
Every garage is different so a pass at one garage may not be a pass at another, its all pretty hit and miss as far as I can tell

Many thanks for all the replies - I have susequently taken the car and got it rechecked and most of the major things were picked up and repaired ie brake pads were worn out. But the main thing is that I got everything fixed for nearly half the amount the other garage quoted. I have been told that the car is essentially on its last legs - or should I say "wheels" but it will get me through the next 6 months - which gives me enough time to look around for another one.....
