Just heard of yet another suicide in Bridgend 'South Wales'. It's the 17th one over this year of a young person commiting suicide in this area.
The police arnt linking them....... but this can't be just one of those things surely????

I wonder if the police want to play down any link to bebo (or whatever site they suspect) so as not to encourage anyone else to get caught up in this.
There was a bloke from Brigend council on the news the other day who claimed that the suicide rate in the town was not as high as in other parts of Wales, but surely there could never have been a period where so many people from the same age group committed suicide over such a short space of time, within such a small geographic area???

I absolutely agree with that theory regarding the police -I have myself thought it was good strategy -but another poor soul so soon after the 2 cousins -i'm afraid that the police are going to up against trying to suppress it.
When I heard it on the news at luchtime -i-I thought -o no what did you want to go and make it almost headline news (if it werent for Castro) -it almost adds kudos to people who feel vulnerable and who live in that area -even although they wont be there to see the result.

now that i have read this thread in its entirety and i feel like committing suicide myself. i am trying to work out in my mind which is the easies, less painful way to do it. the temptation is so strong, it's gaining on my will to not do it. not that you all will miss me, but if you don't see me again just know that i did it. and i am not joking, i am serious.
I think it needs to be addressed whether these are 'linked' in a sinister way (for example a pact), or 'linked' in a far less sinister way, (young impressionable kids living in the same area).
Firstly, I'd really steer clear of the Bebo and Emo scare stories. Bebo is not much more different to Facebook, and not too far removed from AB, it's not some sort of underground cult where every kid with a profile is swapping suicide tips. Leave the Emo's alone, they're the angsty miserable teens, but a tiny fraction go in for self harm and suicide. If anything they're the most articulate young kids out there who will go on and do well in life.
Suicide in clusters is not a new thing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copycat_suicide - this is a fascinating Wiki page.
You find that in an area where there are a few sudden suicides it can spiral out of control quite quickly, with teenagers especially given their unstable emotions and inability to deal with grief as well as others

I agree there, whatever it is (sinister or impressionable kids) these is still a problem. I'm not sure if I believe the bebo thing, but I also know I'm out of touch with teens and just don't understand them in the same way I don't understand Goths or Hoodies etc....
... but then again sp1814 it could be possible for the police to be playing down this bebo thing. Surely an enquiry is the only answer!

Supernick -I know what your saying and I agree entirely with you -but thats assuming you like myself are not an impressionable ansgt ridden teenager but a 'rational' adult.
As you know there is a chasm of difference.
Bebo has been implied as a link because -there was a link .
In my last post I inferred that I was aghast that it had been made headline (almost) news and lo and behold the parents of Nathaniel Pritchard have just announced that the part the media are playing in this- they feel -were partially responsible for his death.
As an adult I can see exactly where they are coming from -impressionable teens will see that as their 15minutes-going out in a blaze of glory.I think the media should be more responsible in their reporting of delicate situations like this and stop sensationalising it as 'breaking news'.

Hi Drisgirl - I understand that most of the kids were on Bebo, and that yes, teens talk on Bebo. But Bebo isn't somehow a tool that helps to promote suicicde. The only thing it can do is widen the social circle of a kid, just like Answerbank does. If kids were meeting on street corners to be miserable and swap suicide tips, would the link be street corners, or talking? That's a slightly trite comment, but what is important in these cases is not to try and find something to demonise, but to understand the teens and the psychology of it all.
All parents should be talking to their kids about this

I dont think for a minute its anything to do with Bebo, thats ridiculous. So a lot of them had Bebo? They all went to school, they all listened to music, watched tv, had friends and family, are they going to blame any of those? I'm sure there are a lot of things they 'all' havd/did. Most teenagers nowadays have Bebo.
Its a heartbreaking story, suicide 'clusters' do happen and they usually never find the reason ;-(

I have not had chance to read all replys, but I am afraid its media attention that fuels this cocoon of suicides, the local papers would have been full of it and that just gives people with problems ideas for what they think is the easy way out , We had a similar situation in the city I live in , it started with a jumper off the multi storey car park , the local rag covered it , then again and again and again it happened each time they printed about it , its a fact that some people are susceptable to other peoples ideas as an easy way out , local papers have a lot to answer for , they plant seeds in vulnerable peoples minds and can instigate an hysteria situation ....
