Does a boat have to be named female or are female names customary?

traditonally ships/boats in the UK are referred to as 'she' or 'her'. That doesn't mean they have to be given female names... for instance HMS Invincible doesn't sound particularly feminine!! Call her whatever you feel like! In other countries- for instance Russia- water craft are referred to as 'he'.
